I am graduating from the Airport Operations program in two days. As in getting a Diploma of Technical Studies from BCIT. As in officially completing my first installment of post-secondary education. As in having no more excuse to procrastinate. As in this all will happen in less than 48 hours.
We actually won’t get cap and gowns, as far as I know. We’re way cooler than that, we go business formal~
“The graduation ceremony of BCIT Airport Operations Class 15 will be held at the Aerospace Technology Campus in Richmond, BC, on Wednesday, February 20, 2013, at 2:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served” was what I found in my e-mail inbox last week.
As I had posted before, the last day of classes was in December 2012. My final project of creating an imaginary airport was due in paper form in the first week of January 2013. On January 11, 2013, a week later, I presented my airport to a panel of two instructors and one Transport Canada aerodromes inspector. And then, school was really out.
After the scrambling I went through to put together my project, I felt an unavoidable void as a student. Nothing is due anymore, no readings will ever be assigned again, I will never have to camp in the computer labs at ATC agian. What replaces academic responsibilities is JOB HUNTING. To someone who’s been in school for 14/19=74% of her life, launching a career is pretty daunting. I’m so grateful for working part-time at YVR right now, I’m learning so much on the job about aviation to compliment my program studies.
I think the graduation ceremony will be just the kind of closure and motivation I need to fully transition from student mode to professional mode. Once the diploma is in my hands, I’ll have little reason to hold back from a full-throttle launch of job search. The opportunities are there, so let’s carpe diem.
